Dutch Fork Science Center and Athletic Facilities*
Columbia, South Carolina
Chris Farr served as project manager, with Cumming, for the Dutch Fork High School Additions and Renovations. His responsibilities included project phasing and life safety during construction of the occupied campus as well as ongoing project management throughout construction. As phases of the project were accomplished, he oversaw the transition to owner occupancy and startup of subsequent phases. The project required intense coordination with the school’s educational and athletic faculty to avoid impacting student activities.
The project scope included construction of a new Health Science Center housing classrooms, physical therapy, training areas, weight rooms and coaches’ suites. Also included were football stadium seating expansions and new concessions facilities, new press boxes and seating for the baseball and softball fields, and construction of new practice fields. The additional square footage provided by the Health Science Center allowed for renovations to craeate new educational areas within the existing building including computer labs, mock hospital labs, drama facilities and classrooms. The project also included a rework of the public roadway and complete overhaul of the on-site vehicle traffic pattern for both the high school and adjacent middle school.
Project challenges included removal of subsurface rock without blasting, relocation of public utility right of ways and maintaining utility connections and life safety to the active campus. Farr’s contribution to the success went beyond project management to working closely with the owner and school staff to fulfill their varied needs.
