Irmo High School: Athletic Facilities*
Irmo, South Carolina
Joe Huggins was responsible for the comprehensive construction management and owner representation services for Irmo High School’s renovation and expansion which included the school’s athletic facilities. Responsibilities extended to contract administration and daily oversight of construction which included schedule management and coordination, change order implementation, owner interface with the design team and contractors as well as reporting to and briefing of the school board as required.
The program included a new state-of-the-art field house and weight room and upgrades to W. C. Hawkins Stadium, both of which have become a showplace for the District.
Huggins oversaw the stadium lighting upgrades, new plaza construction, and entry way modernization. At the same time, the District procured and installed new field turf. With the short time frames and specialized details of these fields, the owner handpicked Huggins to manage, supervise and inspect the artificial turf installation on behalf of the District. His inspections and reporting maintained the District’s confidence that the project would be completed and ready for practices and games as scheduled.
After the project began, it was evident that the contractor was overwhelmed. Huggins stepped in to keep the project on track by providing detailed oversight and coordination which resulted in timely completion of the project. He brought expertise to the project that was not available through the contractor, not only from a project management perspective but also from a schedule management and subcontractor coordination level as well.
* This is not an LCK project. It is individual project experience gained by Joe Huggins while Project Manager at CUMMING.
